HELEN STERLING CLARKE

FAMILY LAWYER AND MEDIATOR – B.A, J.D, L.L.B.

As the founder and managing partner of Sterling Law, Helen provides discerning legal counsel to clients across the GTA, with a focus on serving the communities of Mississauga, Oakville, Richmond Hill, and Vaughan. Since her call to the bar in 1992, she has dedicated her practice to navigating the complexities of high-stakes family law and contentious estate matters, delivering strategic solutions that protect her clients’ wealth, business interests, and legacies.

Helen’s approach is a unique synthesis of compassionate counsel and formidable advocacy. She understands that behind significant assets are real people facing profound personal challenges. She is a trusted advisor who listens intently to your needs while acting as a tenacious, no-nonsense advocate dedicated to achieving optimal outcomes.

Protecting Legacies Through Estate & Trust Litigation

Helen provides decisive representation in high-stakes estate disputes where significant assets are on the line. She understands the importance of preserving family wealth and honoring final wishes, representing clients in:

  • Will Contests & Challenges: Vigorously defending or challenging the validity of wills and trusts on grounds of incapacity, undue influence, or fraud.
  • Fiduciary Litigation: Representing beneficiaries and trustees in complex disputes involving the administration of estates and trusts.
  • Power of Attorney Disputes: Contesting the actions of attorneys and guardians to protect vulnerable individuals and their assets.

Strategic Advocacy in High-Net-Worth Family Law

Divorce and separation for high-net-worth individuals involve unique complexities. Helen has extensive experience safeguarding substantial assets and resolving intricate financial disputes with the utmost discretion and strategic precision. Her expertise includes:

  • Complex Property & Asset Division: Skillfully handling the valuation and division of sophisticated assets, including private corporations, professional practices, family trusts, and international properties.
  • Income Determination & Support: Navigating complex income scenarios for business owners and executives to ensure fair and accurate spousal and child support arrangements.
  • Protection of Generational Wealth: Crafting robust marriage contracts (prenuptial agreements) and cohabitation agreements designed to protect family fortunes and business assets.
  • International & Cross-Border Disputes: Expertly managing cases involving international child mobility, foreign property, and enforcement of orders across jurisdictions.

A Dual Approach: Masterful Negotiation & Fearless Litigation

A skilled mediator since 1998, Helen excels at brokering sophisticated settlements outside of the courtroom. She recognizes that a negotiated resolution is often the most efficient and discreet path forward. However, when litigation is unavoidable, she is known as a spirited and relentless opponent in the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice, prepared to vigorously defend her clients’ interests at every stage.

A graduate of Queen’s University and the University of Notre Dame, Helen is an active member of the Peel Law Association, the Ontario Association of Family Mediators, and the Law Society of Ontario.

At Sterling Law, we believe in a team-based approach centered entirely on your needs. Whether through strategic negotiation or formidable litigation, Helen and her team provide the practical, efficient, and powerful solutions necessary to navigate your most significant legal challenges.
